THE STRAITS TRADING GOOD CLASS BUNGALOWS

With only 2,800 prime plots of Good Class Bungalows (GCBs) across 39 gazetted areas, GCBs are the pinnacle of Singapore’s residential property market.

The earliest two bungalows owned by The Straits Trading Company are called Atbara at 5 Gallop Road and Inverturret at 7 Gallop Road. They were designed by R A J Bidwell from Swan & Maclaren. Respectively built in 1898 and 1905, these two Black and White Houses are possibly the oldest Black and White Bungalows in Singapore today.

In 1990 the Government acquired both Atbara and Inverturret.

Today, the company continue to own a unique collection of GCBs, all freehold, nestled in Chatsworth Park precinct with different architectural style and individual discerning taste and preferences.

BLACK and WHITE

Two of the remaining Black and White GCBs from Singapore’s colonial era are relieved in 10 and 12 Cable Road. Both bungalows were originally designed by Swan & Maclaren, a renowned architectural firm around the turn of the 20th century.

They were redeveloped in year 2011. An extension was added to the ‘Conserved House’. Paying tribute to the original architectural design, the black and white style and flair was carried throughout the extension.

URBAN RETREAT

These three GCBs at Nathan Road seek to produce a refreshing architecture that is tranquil, inspired by nature and yet human in scale. Structure, materials and technology are used to express the seamless transition between the interior and exterior.

The resulting designs are both responsive and responsible to the site and its occupants, with consideration being given to the integration and preservation of the surrounding natural environment.

Adopting the same design principles, the Urban Retreat Bungalows are built on existing site conditions; U-shape plans are cleverly conceived to maximize the greenery and create a “shared” open courtyard between the houses.
